On October 1, 2009, President Barack Obama issued an official proclamation declaring that the month of October is National Information Literacy Awareness Month.

What is information literacy? In a nutshell, it is knowing that you need information and then locating, evaluating, and using that information effectively, legally, and ethically.

Information and Library Services works together with both the School of Undergraduate Studies and the Graduate School of Management and Technology to integrate information literacy into the UMUC curriculum. Recognizing the importance of information literacy, the accrediting body for UMUC, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, mandates this inclusion.

When you plan a vacation, buy a car, research for a paper, or have any kind of information need, you are drawing on the skills of information literacy!

Need help further honing these skills? The UMUC library is here to help! For more information, visit www.umuc.edu/library/index.cfm.

Writing a Paper? The Library Has Help

|

This is the time of the semester when many students are in the midst of preparing to write various types of papers for their classes.

In addition to the resources provided by the library in the Writing subject guide, the library has an extensive e-book collection of online resources related to researching and writing various types of papers.

From the library Home Page, click on the tab for E-Books.  Try searches such as:

"writing skills"

writing and research

writing and reports

and you will find helpful e-books such as Schaum's Quick Guide to Writing Great Research Papers that will help you get started on the writing process.

Another great resource UMUC offers is the Effective Writing Center.  Be sure to check out the resources and services they offer as well.

The Department of Homeland Security offers cybersecurity tips and, each week in October, features a different cybersecurity issue. You can even become a Champion of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

If you're writing a research paper about cybersecurity, check out the UMUC Library's subject guide. Considering a career in cybersecurity? UMUC has a program for you.
