The Klencke Atlas is the largest book in the world. The 350-year-old book of maps will go on public display for the first time ever with its pages open, as part of the British Library's exhibition "Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda, and Art" in April.

Haiti Earthquake Information

The National Library of Medicine has compiled a list of information resources on the Haiti earthquake.

The resources include general information on disaster response as well as many Web sites specifically about Haiti. All the resources come from authoritative agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.

You can nominate someone at the Citizens Medal Web site.

According to the Web site, the 2010 Citizens Medal "will recognize U.S. citizens who have performed exemplary deeds of service outside of their regular jobs."

The deadline for nominations is January 28, so nominate an outstanding citizen soon!

The New York Times has compiled a list of relief agencies seeking contributions to help Haitians during this major humanitarian crisis.

Also, the FBI offers tips on avoiding scams that have arisen alongside the Haitian relief effort.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, the federal government has established a Web site, mlkday.gov, with links to volunteer opportunities and other resources. The Web site states:

"On January, 18, 2010, people of all ages and backgrounds will come together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the 'Beloved Community' that Dr. King envisioned."

Individuals can volunteer or create their own project. There are also resources for organizations.

Miep Gies, 1909-2010

miep2.jpgMiep Gies, the woman who risked her own life to hide Anne Frank and her family during World War II, and who saved Anne Frank's diary for posterity, died on January 11. She was 100 years old.

Miep Gies always denied being a hero; instead, she said she was an ordinary person doing her duty to help others.

You can request her autobiography, Anne Frank Remembered: The Story of Miep Gies, Who Helped to Hide the Frank Family, as well as Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl, through our library.

Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online is a free publication from the Federal Trade Commission. Available as a PDF in English and Spanish, it helps parents talk to children of different ages about important topics such as:
